Note: This is not a scientific test or lens review and should not be taken in anyway shape or form as such, i simply write my experience with these lenses and an attempt to give those interested an idea of what to expect using this combination.
One of my favorite focal lengths on the X-Pro 1 using Minolta or Konica manual focus lenses are the 50mm which equates to 75mm on a 35mm format. As with all Minolta lenses, they are extremely well made though not in the level of the early Auto Rokkor’s, they are compact and balance very well on the X-Pro 1 considering their focal lengths . They are absolutely perfect lenses for portraits… Performance of these lenses are extremely good, especially the 1st generation MC wide open at f2 you get a nice soft sharp rendering, stopped down to f/4-5.6 they are at their best without any noticeable difference amongst the early and later ones.
To my knowledge, Minolta never made any 50mm Auto Rokkors, the early Auto Rokkors were made mostly with focal lengths ranging from 53mm – 58mm with large aperture values also ranging from f/1.4-f/2. The rare 53mm f/2 1964 for the SR-1 had a very short life, it is quite hard to come by on the used market. I will be writing about these early Auto Rokkors in another post.
I prefer the build quality of the MC’s 55mm filter threads with metal mounts much better as they are more solid than the all plastic MD’s either with 49/55mm filter thread. Regardless of which variation, MD or MC, the Minolta 50mm f/2’s are simply superb lenses on the X-Pro 1. They produce excellent nice sharp results wide open with fantastic bokeh – again, superb lenses for portrait photography. I really enjoy using these focal lengths.
